Why a keel.

A keel is the structural spine of a boat. It does three things, all of them below the waterline, unseen from the deck. The crew never looks at it. They just feel the boat stop wallowing.

Ballast.

The keel's weight keeps the boat upright when the wind loads the sails. A written process keeps a company upright when work piles on: the busy season, a big job, a key person on holiday. Without it, the owner is the only ballast, and the boat heels further every time the wind picks up.

Lateral resistance.

Without a keel a boat slides sideways as much as it moves forward. Without a shared way of working, effort leaks: re-entered data, missed hand-offs, the owner re-explaining the same thing. The portal is the fin that turns effort into forward motion.

The load path.

Rigging tension is enormous, and it is carried down through a reinforced grid into the hull, not held by any one fitting. The delegation map does the same for the owner: the load spreads through the structure instead of resting on one person.
